“When targeting big fish, my goal is to land them as quickly as possible. It’s now 10, 20 or 30 minutes, not 1, 2 or 3 hours. Newer two speed reels make this possible because they have the proper drag range, giving me a 30% drag setting at strike and a corresponding 50% at full. For a 130 pound line class “50” sized reel, that means 700 yards of 130 pound braid and a 130 fluoro topshot with 40 pounds of drag at strike and 65 pounds of drag at full. But the reel is only half of the equation. The rod is the other half. A 130 pound-class Invictus has to hold up under a maximum 65 pounds, and it will. Likewise, the Viper for 100 pound line class, the Centaur for 80, and the Raptor for 60, will all hold up under these heavier drag pressures. When that big yellow fin is straight up and down, you now have the confidence to push these reels to full if needed, knowing that the rod can handle these extreme loads.”
